Taking care of our communities is at the heart of our We Serve Core Behavior. We support our communities every day through volunteer initiatives, corporate giving and product donations, in addition to fundraisers and grants through the SpartanNash Foundation. Our corporate and Foundation giving are centered around three main giving pillars — Hunger, Heroes and Hope. To learn more about the impact we drove in these areas last year, check out our latest SpartanNash Foundation impact report.

2023 SpartanNash Foundation Impact Report

Since 2015, the SpartanNash Foundation has granted nearly $13.6 million to nonprofit partners:

  • Providing meals for the food insecure through food pantries and food banks
  • Mobilizing our global supply chain to provide water and food in response to natural disasters
  • Supporting our military Veterans and first responders, both physically and mentally
  • Providing training and nutritional education for Special Olympics athletes
  • Giving young people the knowledge and skills to plan for the future

With each of these efforts, we are enabling brighter futures for those served through our nonprofit partners, giving them continuing opportunities, a renewed sense of security, and the ability to thrive.

SpartanNash Foundation Giving Pillars

Hunger, Heroes and Hope

SpartanNash Foundation - Hunger Pillar

Hunger: Programs that reduce food waste, fight food insecurity, and expand health and nutrition access and education

"We are so grateful to partner with SpartanNash to help provide our food-insecure neighbors with healthy, fresh, and nutritious food through these tough times. Our work is not possible without generous farmers, hard-working volunteers, and faithful hunger relief partners like SpartanNash who distribute the food. Together, we are making a difference in Indiana!"
Dawn Barnes
Indiana Regional Director, Society of St. Andrew
SpartanNash Foundation - Heroes Pillar

Heroes: Programs that support U.S. military servicemembers, Veterans and their families; community leaders including teachers, law enforcement, firefighters, healthcare workers and blood donors; SpartanNash frontline heroes and Associate volunteers; and disaster relief efforts

“Funding provided by the SpartanNash Foundation contributed greatly to alleviating food insecurity among our Active Duty servicemembers, including the distribution of nearly 2,000 Thanksgiving meals to junior-enlisted military members in 2023. Our organization, and especially the families we serve, are deeply grateful to SpartanNash.”
Laura Baxter
Executive Director, Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads
SpartanNash Foundation - Hope Pillar

Hope: Programs that support career training and pathways, a more sustainable environment, and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB)

"SpartanNash has been the presenting sponsor for the Special Olympics Michigan State Summer Games for over four decades. The funds raised during the Foundation’s in-store fundraisers translate into joy and experiences that will last a lifetime for our athletes, families and volunteers."
Tim Hileman
President and CEO, Special Olympics Michigan

Annual Fundraising Campaigns

Throughout the year, the SpartanNash Foundation invites the communities we serve to join us in supporting national, regional and local 501(c)(3) nonprofit partners. Guests who visit SpartanNash-operated stores or shop with us online can donate at checkout. In 2023, we raised and granted nearly $1.1 million through four companywide fundraisers. Funds were granted to local chapters of Junior Achievement and Special Olympics, as well as food pantries and Hero partners that serve our military and provide disaster relief.

Grantmaking

We also invite nonprofit organizations that align with the Foundation’s giving pillars submit a grant application. Grants are reviewed throughout the year by our SpartanNash Foundation Board of Trustees, with a focus on developing impactful partnerships in the communities we serve.
