People First
SpartanNash’s success is rooted in the strength and wellbeing of our Associates, customers and communities, which is why we prioritize a People First culture. Our initiatives focus on human capital management, consumer health and wellness, a sustainable supply chain, community engagement, corporate giving and grant funding, demonstrating our commitment to creating positive, lasting impacts for all stakeholders.
Culture and Engagement
At SpartanNash, we believe our People First initiatives drive value for Associates, shareholders, independent wholesale customers and store guests. We strive to create an environment where Associates are valued and empowered to support each other, our customers and the communities we serve to deliver against our business objectives. Having Associates who reflect and understand the communities we serve means we can better connect with store guests and customers.
We actively attract, develop and retain talent from all backgrounds, experiences, skills and abilities.
We strive for inclusive behaviors, encouraging a culture where all Associates are valued for their contributions to the Company.
We train our leaders and expect them to live our Core Behaviors and support our People First, high-performance culture.
Associate Resource Groups
Associate Resource Groups (ARGs) are Associate-led groups centered around common interests, backgrounds or experiences. They are an important component of our workplace and help Associates connect with others within the organization. ARGs are a way for people to come together around shared experiences and create a supportive network within the workplace. Each ARG has a sponsor from our Executive Leadership Team who assists with communication, connection and alignment. We have four ARGs offering a place for Associates to feel supported by each other and by allies within the company. SpartanNash ARGs include: TIDE (BIPOC Network), SN VETS (Veterans’ Network), WIN (Women’s Network), and RISE (Young Professionals Network).

Fair Food Pledge
SpartanNash is proud to be the first food distributor and retailer in Michigan to sign Migrant Legal Aid’s Fair Food Pledge, affirming our commitment to fair labor practices for the state’s more than 94,000 migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families since 2016.
The Fair Food Pledge exemplifies SpartanNash’s commitment to corporate responsibility and upholding fair and equitable labor standards for the treatment of farmworkers.
SpartanNash distributes fresh produce from 250 Michigan farms to its nearly 200 company-operated stores and more than 2,300 independent retail locations, and we strive to run our business with integrity and accountability. Our customers purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at our stores and independent retailers every day, and we want them to know that as a company, we are committed to providing them with produce that has been harvested under safe and equitable working conditions.
By signing the Michigan Fair Food Pledge, SpartanNash pledges to work in partnership with Migrant Legal Aid when Michigan produce suppliers appear to be in violation of regulations requiring fair treatment and safe working conditions. This includes respecting the dignity of workers, treating them with fairness and equity and providing fair wages, access to bathrooms and drinking water and safe, clean housing.
Michigan is the second-most agriculturally diverse state after California. Forty-five Michigan crops are hand harvested by migrant and seasonal farmworkers each year, including blueberries, tart cherries, apples and cucumbers.
